Moorhouse supported Angel Trains in developing a comprehensive carbon emissions baseline – identifying key data gaps, standardising data processes, and creating a repeatable methodology centred on best practice.
What was the challenge?
Angel Trains Limited (ATL) is the UK’s largest rolling stock company and leases out nearly 4,000 trains to operators across the UK. In 2025 they recognised that to realise their long-term net zero sustainability ambitions and comply with emerging reporting obligations, they needed to establish a complete and reliable carbon emissions baseline.
However, given the complexity of emissions across its value chain, ATL needed expert support to understand data requirements, identify critical data gaps, and build a repeatable methodology that is aligned with best practice.
How did we help?
Moorhouse conducted a detailed assessment of operations to set an organisational boundary. Direct, indirect and value chain emission sources were categorised and data requirements articulated in accordance with the Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol and industry standards.
Through stakeholder interviews, documentation reviews, and gap analysis workshops, a comprehensive understanding of ATL’s emissions readiness was developed. Action plans were created to close data gaps, document and standardise data collection and reporting processes, and identify emission factors that best fit with ATL operations.
A GHG Protocol document was created to document how ATL should calculate, track and manage GHG emissions on an ongoing basis. This document is aligned with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and with the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) Carbon Accounting Framework.
What was the impact?
