At this year’s Future of Media Technology Conference, leaders from across digital media, news and publishing came together to explore the strategies, technologies and ideas shaping the future of the industry.

Across the discussions, five themes stood out:

1. The industry continues to double down on relationships – and independent creators are raising the bar

The shift away from reach alone is well underway. The challenge now is turning audiences into deeper, more habitual and valuable relationships.

Subscriptions, apps, newsletters and communities remain critical, but creators have raised expectations – building loyalty around recognisable personalities, specialist interests and accessibility. Our research shows creators are often winning on relationships, even where established media retains an advantage in institutional trust and authority.

For publishers, the opportunity is not simply to imitate creators, but to make the people and expertise behind their journalism more visible – while connecting those relationships back to the institution.

2. Quality journalism and trusted brands become more valuable in an AI and creator-led economy, not less

As information becomes easier to generate and replicate, original reporting, expertise, verification and provenance become more important differentiators.

Creators bring personality and accessibility; AI can radically lower the cost of producing and repackaging information. But established media retains assets that are difficult to reproduce – from newsgathering and editorial standards to specialist talent and trusted brands.

The opportunity is to combine institutional authority with the personality and accessibility audiences increasingly expect. Established media and creators are increasingly converging, rather than simply competing.

3. AI is both a threat to distribution and an opportunity to reinvent the economics of publishing

As AI changes how audiences discover and consume information, publishers need to protect and monetise their content through licensing and new machine-led models.

At the same time, AI offers significant opportunities to personalise experiences, improve conversion and reshape the cost and efficiency of content production.

4. Audience behaviour is fragmenting – publishers need to adapt the experience, not abandon the product

Video, social, creators and AI are reshaping how audiences discover and consume news, particularly among younger audiences.

But adopting creator-style formats alone is unlikely to differentiate. These are rapidly becoming the baseline; the real advantage lies in the audience proposition, production model, talent strategy and organisational structures behind them.

There is no single creator strategy – publishers need to be clear about the audiences they want to reach and the value they are trying to create.

5. The winners will find more ways to monetise the journalism and audiences they already have

Publishers continue to move beyond traditional advertising and subscriptions towards events, intelligence, APIs, D2C, licensing and new advertising models – underpinned by better data and more joined-up customer journeys.

The creator economy creates further possibilities: publishers can build, partner with or acquire creator propositions, while potentially turning capabilities such as production, sales, rights and technology into services for a wider creator ecosystem.

So what

The future of media is not just about adopting the latest technology or chasing audiences onto the next platform. It is about where and how publishers create and retain value.

The organisations that navigate this transition successfully will combine the authority, journalism and infrastructure of established media with the intimacy, agility and audience understanding of the best new media businesses – while making clear choices about what to build, what to stop doing and what to own.
