On October 14 at 12:00 noon, the Valdai Club will host an expert discussion in Moscow, titled “Results of the German State Elections: A New Political Reality?”
In September, elections for regional parliaments took place in three German states. The “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party secured a decisive victory in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In Berlin, the party finished third, trailing behind The Left and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
The AfD has gained the opportunity to lead a coalition majority. Leaders of the so-called “people’s parties”—the Social Democrats (SPD) and the CDU, both from the ruling coalition—have already acknowledged a historic defeat.
What do the election results signify? How will they impact the incumbent German Chancellor? What steps can the ruling coalition in Berlin take to prevent the “far-right” from coming to power? What are the prospects for a shift to the right in German politics? And is it possible to speak of the emergence of a new political identity in the East German states? Participants in the expert discussion will try to answer these and other questions.
