On 23 October at 11:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club’s Moscow venue will host a discussion entitled “Russia and Africa: In It for the Long Haul?”

The end of October will see the third Russia–Africa summit and economic and humanitarian forum. When the first summit was held seven years ago, in 2019, the intensification of Russian policy in Africa came as a surprise not only to Western countries but to China as well. Today, Russia’s presence is becoming ever more multifaceted: in some places, it helps to bring about political stabilisation and to counter terrorist threats, while in other countries Russian companies are involved in developing national economies.

This matters all the more now, as Africa’s post-colonial period of development draws to a close and the states of the continent begin to shape their own vision of the future and make independent decisions. At the same time, African countries are becoming more strongly represented on multilateral platforms, notably in BRICS and the G20, and their role in international affairs is growing.

Which forms of cooperation with African countries are proving the most durable at present? What might relations between Russia and the states of Africa look like in 15–20 years’ time? What contribution will the third Russia–Africa summit make to the development of cooperation? The participants in the Valdai Club discussion will seek to answer these questions, and others besides.
