On November 23 at 11:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will host the presentation of Valdai Paper No.130 titled “Will Greater Asia Become the New Geopolitical Centre?”
If Greater Asia were to become the world’s geopolitical centre, continental Eurasian corridors would gain a significance equal to that of traditional maritime trade routes. The sphere of security could also shift; the most critical diplomatic efforts of the great powers, as well as arms races and the epicentres of crises, might migrate to this region.
At the same time, Greater Asia has never before functioned as a unified geopolitical space. Geographical features and cultural differences have prevented the region from coalescing around shared values or common political interests. It has never even developed a kind of enduring, formal alliance structures seen in Europe, where nations exist in much closer proximity to one another.
What would a world centred on Asia look like? What roles would the SCO and BRICS play in such a world? Can Russia continue to maintain a balance between India and China? How will NATO compete for influence in the region? Participants in the presentation of the Valdai Paper will address these and other questions.
