On 17 September at 16:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will host a presentation of the report titled “Contemporary Brazil–Russia Cooperation: Strategic Guidelines for Overcoming Structural Constraints.”
Brazil’s diplomatic stance on the Ukrainian crisis has helped maintain dialogue with Russia and ensured unprecedented growth in trade flows. Both countries have managed to adapt to the crisis: bilateral trade figures for 2022–2026 were the highest ever recorded, with trade turnover exceeding $10 billion.
UN General Assembly votes continue to demonstrate consistent alignment between Brazil and Russia on a wide range of topics, from space regulation, disarmament, and non-proliferation to the Middle East crisis. At the same time, the decline in the effectiveness of multilateral cooperation—such as within the WTO and UN climate negotiations—is reducing the importance of political coordination and the scope for Russian—Brazilian cooperation.
Currently, relations with Russia and BRICS are at the centre of Brazil’s domestic political struggle. The report’s authors analyse in detail the reasons for the relatively negative image of Russia among a certain segment of the Brazilian population. This is particularly relevant in the run-up to the Brazilian presidential election.
What areas of bilateral cooperation are the most promising? How can trade imbalances be overcome and trade be diversified? What role does public opinion play in Russia—Brazil relations? And how can it be influenced? Participants in the presentation of the new Valdai Club report will attempt to answer these and other questions.
